Criteria for Choosing a Juice Machine
Types of Juice Machines
There are two basic types of machines that extract juice. They are as follows:
Masticating • With this type of machine, fruits and vegetables are squeezed through gears that crush them and force them through a fine stainless steel strainer. The pulp is continuously extracted. This type generally extracts more nutrients in the juice; also, because it generates less heat and friction, more enzymes are preserved.
Centrifugal • This type of juicer uses a spinning basket that shreds the fruit and vegetables and forces the juice through a fine stainless steel strainer by centrifugal force. Depending on the make of juicer, pulp can be continuously extracted or collected in the basket. Centrifugal juicers cause slight oxidation of the nutrients by introducing air into the juice.
Criteria for Choosing a Juice Machine
Ease of use • If a juice machine is easy to use and clean, it will be used more often.
Size of opening • Most new juicing machines have an opening large enough to hold a whole apple. The larger the opening, the less preparation required.
Yield • The goal is to extract the most juice from the fruit or vegetable as possible. Juicers that eject the pulp outside the machine yield less juice than juicers that keep the pulp in the basket. However, with continual extraction, a larger quantity of juice may be made without stopping to clean out the basket.
Reliability • Look for a 5- to 10-year warranty on motor and parts. Look for companies that supply replacement parts at reasonable cost.
