Denis Daneman

DENIS DANEMAN, OC, MBBCh, DSc (Med), FRCPC, FFPAED (Hon) RCPI, is Professor and Chair Emeritus at the Department of Paediatrics, University of Toronto, and Paediatrician-in-Chief Emeritus at SickKids.

Denis was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, immigrating to Canada in 1975 after completing his medical degree. He completed his residency in Paediatrics in Toronto, and his Endocrinology fellowship in Pittsburgh.

Denis has been on the staff of SickKids and University of Toronto since 1981. He is an unapologetic Canada-Phile, a confessed bibliophile and ardent advocate for child health and well-being. He has had a highly productive career successfully integrating the four pillars of academia: clinical excellence, teaching and mentorship, research and advocacy. He completed a ten year tenure as Chair/Chief in Toronto.

Denis' career focus has been on improving the lives of children with type 1 diabetes. This has expanded to all children, especially those with complex chronic disease. He has received innumerable awards for his work including: The 2010 ISPAD Prize, the 2013 Canadian Diabetes Association Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2015 CAPHC Award for Contributions to Child Health, an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland 2016, and was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2017.

He is also the 2018 recipient of the Allan Ross Award, the highest honour bestowed by the Canadian Paediatric Society. Denis' greatest delight is in watching the flourishing of his trainees, his patients, his children and grandchildren.
