Create Your Own Root Cellar? Why Not!

July 30, 2012

Longing to get back to basics and simple living? Hoping to eat more fresh local fruits and veggies all year round? Well, how about creating your very own root cellar? It’s no where near as hard as you may think and root cellars can be a valuable addition to any home food storage system because they allow you to store some fruits and vegetables for longer time periods than would normally be possible.

Did you know you can even build a root cellar if you’re in an apartment, a condo, or if you’re in a home with no basement? Most people have no idea how to build a root cellar and think it’s far too complicated and expensive. But, Steve Maxwell says it’s really not. Steve is an expert on everything related to home improvement, and his book, The Complete Root Cellar Book contains detailed plans, diagrams and instructions for several different root cellars. The plans have illustrated, detailed construction diagrams. The book even lists sources for material.

Once you’ve designed and created the perfect root cellar for your home, simply select the type of provisions you wish to store and read all about how best to keep and prepare them from food writer extraordinaire Jennifer MacKenzie, who has included 100 recipes using many of the fruits and vegetables that would typically be stored in your root cellar. Some of Jennifer’s spectacular recipes include: Cauliflower Soup with Spiced Pear Crisps, Caramel-Roasted Apple and Blue Cheese Salad, Sweet Potato Rosti, Roasted Squash Risotto, Prime Rib Roast with Onions, Double Apple Coffee Cake, Pumpkin Orange Chutney, to name a few.

With the trend to local eating and growing fresh produce increasing, so too has the interest in creating one’s own root cellar. It’s far more economical – food lasts longer and stays fresher at minimal cost. Just imagine being able to go to your very own root cellar and simply grab some potatoes, a squash, a bunch of carrots…you name it. We believe there’s nothing better than knowing where your food comes from – and where better than your very own home?
