Mama's Italian Cheeseburgers

If burgers are starting to become mundane, put some excitement in those patties. Instead of cheese on top of the burger, put shredded cheese right in the ground meat mixture for moist burgers with a twist. Mama would be pleased!

Ingredients Makes 4 burgers

1⁄4 cup tomato pasta sauce 60 mL
1⁄4 cup grated or minced onion 60 mL
1 clove garlic, minced 1
1⁄4 tsp dried basil or oregano leaves 1 mL
1⁄4 tsp salt 1 mL
1⁄4 tsp freshly ground black pepper 1 mL
3⁄4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese 175 mL
1⁄3 cup dry seasoned bread crumbs 75 mL
1 lb lean ground beef 500 g
4 hamburger buns, split and toasted 4


  • Preheat greased barbecue grill to medium-high
  1. In a bowl, combine tomato pasta sauce, onion, garlic, basil, salt and pepper. Stir in cheese and bread crumbs; mix in beef. Shape into four 3⁄4-inch (2 cm) thick patties.
  2. Grill, turning once, for 6 to 7 minutes on each side or until no longer pink in center. Serve in buns.
