Pore De-Gunking Coffee Facial Scrub (vegan, gluten-free, cruelty-free)

December 8, 2018

All right, all you coffee fiends, let’s put those coffee grounds to use on your faces! Coffee wakes you up, yes, but it’s also an incredible exfoliant. It sloughs off dry, crusty, dead skin (gross but true), and it smells so good. The caffeine in the beans helps treat redness and inflammation, and decreases the appearance of under-eye circles. This is a fabulous gift for the DIY'er in your life.

21⁄2 tsp coconut oil 12 mL
1 tbsp very finely ground coffee 15 mL
11⁄2 tsp packed fine vegan brown sugar 7 mL
1 tsp maple syrup 5 mL

  • Blender (optional)
  • Best for: All skin types
  1. In a small saucepan over low heat, melt coconut oil.
  2. In blender, purée coconut oil, coffee, brown sugar and maple syrup until well combined and spreadable. Spoon into a small bowl. (Alternatively, in a small bowl, whisk ingredients together until smooth.)
  3. Using fingers, spread scrub all over damp cleansed facial skin, using circular motions.
  4. Rinse face with warm water and pat dry with a towel. Follow with your favorite toner, serum and moisturizer.
  5. Cover and store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
You don’t need to grind coffee beans specially for this recipe. Feel free to use the leftover grounds from your morning cup-o’-joe. Or sub in the coffee-and-rooibos combo leftover from making a batch of Kick-Ass Wake-Up Coffee Serum (page 90). In either case, run them through a coffee or spice grinder a few times to make sure they’re really fine.
